PIS Mission Statement

Pownal Independent School

Description (What We Are)
Pownal Independent is a small secular Classical school for students in grades 4-8.  We focus on both academics and on our students' relationships and responsibilities to their community

Mission (What We Will Do)
Our students learn how to make a difference in their future and in the future of their community every day.

Vision (How We Will Do It)
Pownal Independent challenges its student to use their minds well and provides them with the curriculum, instruction, assessment, support, and time they need to meet our rigorous academic standards.  Pownal Independent's Board of Overseers recognizes that early adolescence is characterized by dramatic cognitive growth, enabling students to think in more abstract and complex ways.  Our curriculum is challenging, engaging, and taps into our young adolescents' energy, interests, and curiosity.

Pownal Independent creates a small learning community in which stable, close, and mutually respectful relationships support our students' intellectual, ethical, and social growth.  Our students have opportunities for both independent inquiry and learning in cooperation with others.  Our school is deeply rooted in our community, and Pownal Independent uses its community as a classroom, inviting community members to provide resources, connections, and active support.

Pownal Independent has high expectations for all of its students, and we are committed to helping each child produce work of high quality.  Our students learn that knowledge without context, exploration without logic, and acquisition without perseverance is only rain on barren ground.  Our students will leave Pownal Independent fully prepared for the secondary school of their choice.
